Chilling Effects Clearinghouse: hours of fun with Cease and Desist notices

The Chilling Effects Clearinghouse, a joint project of the Electronic Frontier Foundation and Harvard, Stanford, Berkeley, University of San Francisco, University of Maine, George Washington School of Law, and Santa Clara University School of Law clinics, has been compiling a database of searchable Cease and Desist (C&D) notices.

With the intent of “helping Internet users to know their rights and understand the law” the Chilling Effects collects legal complaints by allowing users to upload sent or received C&D Notices directly through their website.

C&D’s include complaints of trademark infringement, copyright infringement and defamation, among others. Notable is the volume of Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA), Section 512(c) takedown notices that services such as Digg and Google regularly receive.
